The Pullmans of Prairie Avenue

March 3, 2019 @ 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM

THE PULLMANS OF PRAIRIE AVENUE
George and Hattie Pullman occupied one of the largest mansions on Prairie Avenue, known in the late 19th century as “the sunny street that held the sifted few.” In this illustrated lecture, we will briefly explore Prairie Avenue and a few of its most notable residents, and then take a detailed look at the Pullman mansion, using a set of images taken shortly before its demolition in 1922, to learn what life was like for the Pullmans and their children.

The lecture will be given by Pullman resident Bill Tyre, author of Chicago’s Historic Prairie Avenue and Executive Director and Curator of Glessner House, located on Prairie Avenue catty-corner from the site of the Pullman mansion. Bill will give a photographic tour and lecture in celebration of George M Pullman’s home on Prairie Avenue. The Pullman Choir will give a choral celebration of George Pullman’s birthday. Birthday cake will be served.
